Detroit, MI — Eminem is once again in the headlines, caught in a whirlwind of unsettling legal drama and heartwarming family news. A stalker who has persistently targeted the rapper was recently convicted of breaking into his home for the second time—just as the artist welcomed his first grandchild.
Matthew David Hughes, 32, was found guilty on May 7 of first-degree home invasion and aggravated stalking after a short trial in Macomb County, during which Eminem—real name Marshall Mathers—testified about the alarming incident. Hughes remains in custody at Macomb County Jail, having been unable to post the $500,000 bond set by the judge. A no-contact order has been issued, and Hughes is scheduled to be sentenced on June 17.
The latest break-in occurred in the summer of 2024, just months after Hughes was released on parole. His arrest followed a string of previous encounters with law enforcement involving the rapper. Most notably, in 2020, Hughes broke into Eminem’s home and was discovered by the artist himself, who reported waking up to find Hughes standing inside his house. When questioned, Hughes chillingly stated he was there to kill him. That incident resulted in a plea deal and a five-year probation sentence in September 2021. However, he was arrested again in November 2021 for simple assault, violating his probation and serving jail time.
Hughes was released on parole in May 2024, but his troubling obsession with Eminem continued. Prior to these incidents, in 2019, he was also found sleeping in the guest house of a property previously owned by the rapper, further demonstrating a years-long pattern of stalking behavior.
Despite the renewed legal turmoil, Eminem recently experienced a life-changing moment on a much more positive note—becoming a grandfather. His daughter, Hailie Jade, gave birth to her first child with fiancé Evan McClintock and shared the joyful news on April 4 via Instagram.
The couple named their son Evan Marshall McClintock, with “Marshall” serving as a tribute to Hailie’s famous father. Hailie’s post, featuring sweet photos of her newborn, was captioned: “Happy due date // 3 weeks earthside little e [white heart emoji].” The news was met with an outpouring of support from fans, friends, and family.
50 Cent, a close friend and longtime collaborator of Eminem, reposted the announcement, writing: “Congratulations. This is the best. WOW!” Eminem’s adopted daughter Alaina also celebrated the moment, commenting: “Obsessed with this tiny human and could not be more in awe of YOU mama!!! Motherhood is such a beautiful thing and you make it look easy. I am SO proud of you and grateful you have Evan.”
As Eminem faces the ongoing challenges of dealing with a dangerous stalker, he also steps into the new role of grandfather—a powerful contrast that highlights both the risks of fame and the grounding force of family. From the courtroom to the nursery, the rapper’s life continues to unfold in ways both dramatic and deeply personal.
